I Just Want to Be Me(Lela’s adventures on her first day at a new school)is a 36-page, picture book story. Illustrated by Penny Weber, recipient of the Mom’s Choice and Readers Favorite Five Stars awards.
Escapism and angst take over as Lela walks a magical path to attend her first day at a new school.
Lela’s journey teachers her to face her anxiety to overcome fear, and learns through her adventure that the grass is not always greener.
On the way to her new school she morphs into what she thinks she would rather be, from a tree to the sun, a tiger, and then a bird, only to discover that what looks better for the moment is not for her. In the final analysis, she comes to grips with who she is and who she would rather be.
This is a beautifully illustrated tale that captivates a child’s journey into the unknown in a unique, relatable format that helps build a child’s confidence.
I Just Want to Be is a great teaching and learning tool for Grandparents, Parents, and children from pre-school to third grade.
The idea for this story came from my mother, who frequently told me that “if we all put our troubles on the table, most of us would take back our own.” As well as my own anxiety moving from our Brooklyn apartment to a rural area in New Jersey, attending my first day at a new school.
The stories objectives:
-To help 4 t0 9 year old children cope with the anxiety of attending their first day of school.
-Convey a strong message to children from 4 years to 9 years old that their self-worth will help them overcome life’s obstacles.
-Navigating the challenges of attending school in a new neighborhood is possible.
-The story has a strong moral lesson for children attending their first day in a new school: “The grass is not always greener”.
-I Just Want to Be Me teaches pre-school students that being proud of who they are, even if they feel different and don’t feel they belong, can help them fit in.
-When you are proud of your uniqueness and confident in who you are you will be more likely to fit in.
