Washington, D.C. has always drawn millions of visitors with its historic landmarks, world-class museums, and symbolic role as the heart of American democracy. But the city’s tourism industry—already battered by the pandemic and slow international recovery—now faces a new setback: the deployment of the National Guard.
Troops and military vehicles stationed around the capital have created an uneasy atmosphere for tourists. Instead of strolling freely past monuments or enjoying the lively streets near the National Mall, visitors are now greeted by checkpoints, barriers, and heavily armed patrols.
For many small businesses, the impact is immediate. Restaurants, tour companies, and souvenir shops that rely heavily on out-of-town visitors are seeing cancellations and thinning crowds. “This is usually the season when group tours and school trips keep us busy,” said a shop owner near the Capitol. “But when families see soldiers everywhere, they think twice about coming.”
Tourism data confirms the struggle. The number of visitors has not fully returned to pre-pandemic levels, and international travelers—who typically spend more on hotels and dining—remain below expectations. With the Guard’s arrival, hotel managers say bookings have slowed further, as potential guests perceive Washington less as a welcoming destination and more as a city under heightened security.
City leaders find themselves balancing two competing priorities: ensuring safety while preserving the capital’s image as open and accessible. Residents are divided, with some feeling reassured by the extra security, while business owners fear the militarized look will drive away badly needed revenue.
Industry experts warn the consequences could be long-term. “Tourists don’t plan vacations around places that feel tense or restricted,” explained one tour operator. “D.C. has so much to offer, but right now, the first impression is intimidation rather than inspiration.”
As the fall season approaches—a critical period for domestic travel and international visitors alike—local officials and business groups are calling for solutions that protect both security and economic stability. For now, Washington remains caught between its role as a guarded political center and its identity as a city eager to welcome the world back.
