Copenhagen, August 27, 2025 — Denmark has summoned the top U.S. diplomat in Copenhagen after reports surfaced that Americans linked to former President Donald Trump carried out covert influence operations in Greenland. The move marks a sharp escalation in tensions between two NATO allies over political interference in the Arctic.
Allegations of Covert Operations
According to an investigation by Danish broadcaster DR, at least three U.S. citizens with ties to Trump attempted to sway political opinion in Greenland. Their alleged activities included mapping out Greenlanders sympathetic to U.S. interests, targeting critics of Trump, and shaping narratives designed to portray Denmark negatively in American media. They also sought connections with local politicians and business leaders.
Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen condemned the reports as “deeply troubling” and said Denmark would not tolerate foreign meddling in its internal affairs. He confirmed that Mark Stroh, the U.S. chargé d’affaires, was summoned to the Foreign Ministry for an explanation.
Greenland in the Spotlight
Greenland, an autonomous territory under the Kingdom of Denmark, has long been a focal point of international competition due to its mineral wealth and strategic location in the Arctic. The latest allegations reignite memories of Trump’s controversial 2019 proposal to buy Greenland, which Denmark flatly rejected.
Denmark’s intelligence agency, PET, warned that Greenland has increasingly become a target for foreign influence campaigns. Officials believe these efforts are aimed at driving a wedge between Copenhagen and Nuuk, Greenland’s capital, by exploiting local debates about independence and economic development. In response, PET announced it would strengthen its security presence in Greenland.
Political Reactions
Greenlandic politicians reacted strongly to the revelations. Aaja Chemnitz, a member of Greenland’s parliament, said the interference was an insult to the island’s self-determination. “It is beyond a joke that they try to infiltrate our society in this way. Greenland alone will decide its own future,” she told local media.
In Denmark, opposition leaders urged the government to take the matter seriously but avoid overreacting. Some described the U.S. operation as clumsy and amateurish, yet still damaging to trust between allies. Former foreign minister Martin Lidegaard warned that the case could “reopen old wounds” in Denmark’s relationship with Washington.
Washington’s Silence
So far, the U.S. Embassy in Copenhagen has not issued an official comment. The post of U.S. ambassador to Denmark remains vacant, with nominee Kenneth Howery awaiting confirmation in Washington.
A Strain on Allies
The episode underscores the growing geopolitical importance of the Arctic, where powers like the United States, China, and Russia are competing for influence. For Denmark, the controversy is a reminder that Greenland is not just a domestic issue but a global one.
While it remains unclear whether the individuals acted on behalf of official U.S. agencies, Copenhagen’s decision to summon the American envoy signals how seriously it views the affair. For now, the incident has added another layer of strain to transatlantic ties — and put Greenland back at the center of global attention.
