FBI Searches Ex-National Security Adviser John Bolton’s Home in Maryland

Bethesda, Maryland

The FBI on Friday morning searched the Maryland home of former National Security Adviser John Bolton, a longtime critic of former President Donald Trump. Agents also carried out a parallel search at his Washington, D.C., office as part of what officials described as a national security investigation.

Witnesses said law enforcement arrived at Bolton’s Bethesda residence shortly after 7 a.m. Neighbors reported seeing agents carrying boxes from the property, while local police briefly blocked the street. At the same time, FBI teams were spotted entering Bolton’s D.C. office building through a rear entrance.

Bolton, who was not at home during the search, has not been arrested or charged. Federal officials have not publicly detailed the focus of the investigation, though sources say it involves possible mishandling of classified documents.

This is not the first time Bolton’s handling of sensitive information has drawn attention. His 2020 memoir, The Room Where It Happened, faced an unsuccessful Trump administration lawsuit claiming the book revealed classified material. That case was dropped without charges in 2021.

Political Shockwaves

The raid immediately set off political debate in Washington. FBI Director Kash Patel posted on social media: “No one is above the law. Agents are carrying out their duty to protect America’s security.” Attorney General Pam Bondi issued a similar statement, stressing that justice would be pursued “without exceptions.”

Trump, speaking to reporters at the White House, claimed he learned of the raid from television. He dismissed Bolton as “not very smart” and “a lowlife,” but added that the Justice Department would “do what it has to do.” He denied ordering the raid directly, saying, “I could be the one starting it, but I think it’s better this way.”

Bolton’s History with Trump

Bolton, a veteran diplomat and foreign policy hawk, served briefly as Trump’s national security adviser before a bitter split in 2019. Since then, he has been one of Trump’s most outspoken critics, warning repeatedly that a second Trump term could bring “political retribution” against opponents.

Friday’s FBI operation now places Bolton himself at the center of a high-profile probe, raising fresh concerns among critics that federal law enforcement may be increasingly used against political rivals.

For now, it remains unclear what agents were seeking—or whether Bolton will face any legal consequences. Both the FBI and the Justice Department have declined to comment further, citing the ongoing investigation.
