New York, Aug 21, 2025 – Hurricane Erin is churning its way up the East Coast after leaving a trail of damage across North Carolina, where heavy rains, fierce winds, and storm surges flooded coastal towns and cut power to thousands of homes. Now, forecasters warn that the storm’s impact will soon be felt in New York City, where a coastal flood warning is in effect through Thursday morning.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has cautioned residents in low-lying neighborhoods across Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island to prepare for possible street flooding and tidal surges during high tide cycles. The warning also extends to parts of Long Island and New Jersey, where strong onshore winds could push water levels 2 to 4 feet above normal.
North Carolina Hit Hard
Earlier this week, Erin made landfall near Wilmington, North Carolina, unleashing hurricane-force winds exceeding 90 mph and torrential rain that swamped roads and left communities stranded. Emergency crews reported widespread power outages affecting more than 300,000 households, while rivers across the state continued to rise, threatening flash floods.
Local officials described the damage as “severe but uneven,” with some towns escaping the worst while others suffered washed-out highways, downed power lines, and significant property damage. No storm-related deaths have been confirmed so far, though rescue efforts are ongoing.
New York City Braces for Impact
In New York, Mayor Eric Adams urged residents to stay alert and avoid unnecessary travel along waterfront areas. Sandbags have been distributed in flood-prone neighborhoods, and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) said it is monitoring subway stations most vulnerable to flooding.
“While Erin is no longer a Category 2 hurricane, the storm still carries enough force to disrupt daily life in the city,” said NWS meteorologist Rachel Torres. “Strong winds, rough surf, and elevated tides could combine to create dangerous coastal conditions.”
Airports, Transit and Travel Concerns
Airlines have already canceled dozens of flights at JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark airports ahead of the storm’s arrival. Amtrak warned of possible delays or service suspensions along the Northeast Corridor due to flooding and debris on tracks.
Officials also reminded residents not to underestimate post-storm hazards, including downed wires and falling tree limbs as saturated ground makes large trees more vulnerable.
What’s Next for the Northeast
Erin is expected to weaken into a tropical storm as it moves north, but heavy rain bands could still dump 2 to 4 inches of rainfall across New York, Connecticut, and Massachusetts over the next 24 hours. Forecasters say coastal areas should remain vigilant until the storm clears late Thursday.
Gov. Kathy Hochul has activated the state’s emergency response team, adding, “Our priority is protecting lives and ensuring swift recovery once the storm passes.”
